Disk defragmentation refers to a computer maintenance process that is used to clean up fragmented and cluttered data on a hard drive.

A clean and orderly hard drive where files are neatly stored in easily accessible locations works a lot more quickly than a fragmented and cluttered drive.

To avoid this, file defragmentation should be run by all computer users as part of regular computer maintenance to ensure good PC or laptop performance.

You may not realize it but the hard drive is your computer’s only mechanical data processing component, if it underperforms for any reason then it limits the performance of your entire computer.

By the way, disk defragmentation does not create more space, it simply rearranges your files on the hard drive more efficiently over the same amount of space.

How Does The Defragmentation Process Work?

Disk defragmentation undoes the fragmentation of files and free space on a hard drive.

It works by mapping out all of the free drive space and file fragments.

It then figures out how it can reassemble file and free space fragments into whole or nearly whole files or free space.

Some defragmentation tools can only defragment file fragments, it is only the more advanced tools such as Diskeeper that are able to defragment free space too.

Why Is A Defragmented Hard Drive Faster?

A defragmented hard drive is faster than a fragmented hard drive because it doesn’t have to work as hard to access or store files.

When files are stored as fragments in many different locations, the hard drive must cover a lot more distance to locate and pick up the fragments of data.

Although these distances may seem small to us they do add up to a meaningful distance and also a meaningful savings of time.

A hard drive works faster when free space is defragmented because the drive does not need to break files into fragments to store them.

In addition if you do have the ability to do a free space defragmentation then re-fragmentation of your hard drive is slowed down too.

What Actually Gets Defragged (And What Doesn't)

Sometimes I hear mention of wrong sounding terminology such as registry defrag, Windows defrag, Windows XP defrag, Windows Vista defrag and defrag a computer.

If they are referring to the defragmentation tools that can be found bundled with these operating systems then the terminology could be correct.

However if the terms are suggesting they want to defrag their registry, defrag Windows, defrag XP, defrag Vista or defrag their computer then they are missing the point a bit.

The target of the defragmentation process is not a particular operating system or the registry or the entire computer, instead it is the hard drive on which the operating system files (and all other files) are located.

Some advanced defragmenter tools enable you to target particular files for defragmentation, however generally you will need to target all the files on the hard drive.

There are some files known as immovable files that are not defragmented by standard defragmenters or under standard conditions.
