Remove Hiberfil.sys File To Conserve A Large Quantity Of Hard Drive Space

Other Free Up Disk Space Ideas

Here’s how you can remove the hiberfil.sys file from your computer to free up disk space equivalent to your computer’s memory. Depending on how much memory you have installed, this could be a significant amount of hard drive space which will help you to speed up your computer.

Other Ideas On How You Can Speed Up Your Slow Computer
The hiberfil.sys file is where the hibernate feature of your computer saves the entire contents of your computer memory to the hard drive when it enters hibernate mode. The size of this file depends on how much memory your computer has installed on it so for example if you have one gigabyte of memory, it is going to take up one gigabyte of your hard drive. If you want to see if this file is present on your hard drive, look in C:/ or do a search for it using Start Menu / Search.

What Is Your Computer's Hibernate Feature?

“Hibernate” is a method of enabling you to completely turn off your PC and then turn it back on and have everything exactly the same as it was before you went into hibernate. This is very handy because it means you don’t have to shut down all of your running applications and files and then go through the computer shut down process. It also means that when you switch it back on, all of the programs are still running and your files are still open.

How Big Can The Hiberfil.sys File Get?

The size of the hiberfil.sys file completely depends on how much RAM (memory) is installed on your PC. For example if you have 2 gigabytes of RAM installed on your computer, then the hiberfil.sys file is going to take up 2 gigabytes of hard drive space. The only way of controlling the size of this file is to add or remove memory to your computer.

How Do I Remove The Hiberfil.sys File?

It wouldn’t make any sense to remove some of your memory to reduce the size of this file. Although this would conserve some disk space, it would have other adverse effects on your computer performance, which you definitely don’t want.

However, if you do not use the hibernate function on your computer, or if you want to conserve disk space by deciding not to use it, you can remove the hiberfil.sys file. Do not just go and delete it. The correct approach is to turn off hibernate feature as Windows will then automatically delete the file, freeing up disk space equivalent to your computer’s memory. The way to do this is as follows :

Right click on your desktop then in the dropdown menu that appears click on Properties. The following window will appear :

display properties

Click on the Screen Saver tab and you will see the following window:

display properties power

Click on the power button and you will see the following window:

power options

Click on the Hibernate tab and you will see the following window:

hibernate

In this window you can see how much disk space is required to put your computer into hibernation. Mine says 767 megabytes of space which is the amount of RAM I have installed.

To turn off the hibernate feature, simply uncheck the check box then click ok. Now your computer will not be able to hibernate, but you will have saved a lot of space on your disk which will contribute to a faster computer.
