Its Customer Support And Help Is Excellent
Registry Mechanic is a great tool for many reasons, however it is the help and customer support offered which impressed me the most. If you need assistance, then help files are the first place to look. Registry Mechanic did not let me down. PC Tools provides an excellent and easy to follow
online help resource
with the following characteristics - Complete and easy to follow instructions on how to use Registry Mechanic
- An easy to follow table of contents of links
- An index with key terms that you can quickly look up
- A search tool to quickly find what you are looking for
Online support is where you go if you can't find an answer to your question in the help files. The PC Tools website has an excellent online customer support system where customers can sign up for free accounts. The key features of this system are : - Submit requests for support
- Track outstanding support requests
- Get a response to questions within 24 hours
- View expiry dates for products purchased from pctools
- Look up licencing information for the tools you have purchased
- Dowload certain products for free (E.g. PC Tools Firewall Plus)
- Get discounts and special offers on products
The best thing is that on the first page after you log in, it consolidates all of this information into a single summary page which is extremely easy to review.Customer support responsiveness is a very important aspect of keeping customers satisfied and I was very happy with Registry Mechanic in this respect. PC Tools say they will endeavour to get back to you in 24 hours and I was not disappointed. All my assistance requests, even those submitted on Saturday or Sunday were responded to within this promised timeframe.
A Powerful Error Scanning Tool
The most important feature of a registry cleaner is its registry scanning feature and the number of errors this tool can locate. Registry Mechanic reviews well on this aspect coming in second place in terms of the number of errors that it was able to find in my registry. I ran 5 scans over a two month period and it detected an average of 821 different errors for repair. Other features include : - Do a custom registry scan by excluding components of the registry from scans
- Scanning paths lets you select which locations you want to scan for orphaned shortcuts
Highly Informative Error Reporting
How the registry errors are reported is an important feature in a registry cleaner so that you know what is going on and what you can do to deal with them. Here is how Registyr Mechanic reports the errors it finds :Registry Mechanic reports errors in a very useful and informative manner. It gives a brief description of the problem, what kind of error it is, and provides the address in the registry where the error can be located. A really good reporting feature is where it assigns a priority level to each error telling you how important it is that you fix the error. If you are concerned about fixing all errors you can select only the errors with high priority. Also, if you know you don’t need to fix an error, then you can add it to the “Ignore List” and it will be ignored in future scans. One aspect of the software that is completely unique is the error search feature. The search feature lets you do rapid problem identification by inputting a search term and finding all errors with that search term. This is one of the features which makes Registry Mechanic really stand out.
Flexible And Carefully Planned Out Error Fixing Feature
Once you have completed a scan the next step is fixing the errors identified. Error fixing was another area where Registry Mechanic outshone the competition. As with all other tools, using a check box, Registry Mechanic lets you select which errors you want to fix and which errors you want to exclude from being fixed. It also lets you choose errors to add to the “ignore list” which means they will be excluded from future scans and fixes. Importantly, RM backs up the changes it makes to the registry so that you have the option of reversing the repairs, just in case (although the possibility is remote) something changes that shouldn’t. A feature that not all of the competitors offer is the “Remove All Problems Automatically” option. If you want to let Registry Mechanic run through the entire scanning and fixing process without intervention, then you can select this option. If you do select this, it is best to also select the “Create a system restore point before repair” option too, as this will ensure an automatic backup is done. Another feature which makes RM a good buy that is not offered by the other cleaners is the “Log scan” option. If this is selected it will keep records of the state of your PC after a scan. These files are useful for support purposes.
Registry Backup Features
It is especially important to keep a back up of your registry files, particularly if you are going to be making changes to the registry.Registry Mechanic is well thought out in this respect because it automatically keeps a back up of any changes made to the registry and it has a feature enabling you to undo the changes if this is required. In addition, RM has an option to create a System Restore Point automatically before any changes are actually made to the registry. The system restore point is a feature of the XP Windows Operating System that backs up all essential operating system settings so that you can return your operating system to a previous state
RM Has Some Additional Unique Features Not Seen In Other Registry Cleaners
PC Tools, the developer of Registry Mechanic, has built some additional features into the software that are not available in other registry cleaners.Firstly it has a registry monitor which is designed to track and count changes that are made to the registry as they happen. This gives you an indication when you should be running the registry scanning tool again as the more changes are made to your registry, the more likely there are to be errors. There is an “Optimize Your System” button which applies a set of tweaks and patches that make changes inside your registry designed to improve system performance. There is the “Registry Compacting” button which identifies empty space in your registry and then backs up, compacts and defragments the registry. And finally, Registry Mechanic also has a range of shortcuts to take you quickly and easily to 14 other standard Windows Operating System maintenance features including the following : Computer - Computer Management
- Windows Update
- System Restore
- System Properties
- System Information
- Control Panel
Security - Local Security Settings
- Local Users and Groups
- Group Policy Editor
- Windows Security Centre
System - Device Manager
- Disk Management
- Event Viewer
- Performance Monitor
